Apex has MG42 barrels

Post by 88comm »

I have been away from the site for a while, but while searching the Apex site I see that they have barrels for the 42/53. They are Yugo barrels, apparently a little rough and they have had the cam block on the end removed. BUT, they are priced at $50, which I thought was pretty good. You can link to them here: https://www.apexgunparts.com/product_in ... e889992b2b

In my mind a few spare barrels at this price might not be a bad idea.

If this is old news, somebody important please delete it.

Help requested on this
"and they have had the cam block on the end removed"
What part is the cam block and what does this mean to me??
I thought that this was a complete barrel such as came in the parts set that I received.

Help me out on what is missing if someone would be so kind??

Ok, received the barrels and yes they are missing the barrel camming section.
Same old question, where can you buy the barrel camming section? and about how much should one spend on it??

My barrels look good and the 8mm bullet goes in them just fine, (not 308).
Is it hard to change this barrel camming section from barrel to barrel.

Just ordered a 308 barrel with barrel camming section from Lea at IO. Can I change the barrel camming section from the 308 to the 8mm without any major problems??

Goods like a belt and linker sale at IO check it out.
http://www.ioinc.us/12132008eFlyer.pdf

Would like to get one of those linkers and follow the 308 to 8mm conversion tutitorial thats on this website. Later as the money is weak this time of the year.

The barrel extension can be bought for around $30.

I got mine from www.mg34.com. It shouldn't be too hard to change the barrel extension. I know some are "peened" on there. If you buy spare barrels and then a spare extension, you won't have that issue.

I bought three of these barrels, and sent them back.
I even bought the "select grade" for $80 apiece.
They refunded my money - no problem.
The rifling was fine, but the chambers are too big.
An 8mm round slops around in the chamber.
MAYBE they will work OK for semi.
But, on full auto, you get empties stuck in the chamber.
They are real tough on your extractors.
There was a reason that some military removed the ends of them.
They can not pass a chamber Go-No-go gauge.
Robert RTG has the end pieces.
You have to wire wheel them, but they work fine.
These barrels are cheap because the chambers are shot-out.
As always, you get what you pay for.

Are you saying a blank will not properly chamber or headspace?

.......as long as they will correctly "Head-Space".......and the 8x57mm-chambers are not rusted/pitted nor erroded where a shell will stick......they will work fine with "Blanks" due to the lower chamber-pressures.

Well thats interesting, Thanks for the ifo.

You have applied your experience with three barrels that APEX sold you, made an incorrect assumption about why the cam block was removed, and have stated that ALL the chambers are shot-out. That is a pretty big statement.
Those barrels were never gaged or condemmed by any country or military depot. The cam blocks were removed because all the M53's that we manufacture have new US made barrels with original cam blocks installed. It was a customer specified requirement that new US made barrels be used with the M53 and nothing to do with condition, wear or even US 922(r) requirements. APEX bought those barrels from the company we build the M53 for. We crated the barrels up at our facility and shipped them direct to them.
APEX is also the only authorized retailer of the semi-auto parts that WLA manufactures for use in the M53.

I heard that Green Mountain makes the new US MG42 barrels. They are contracted to sell them to WLA and do not sell them out right (that I know of). So I'm betting the only way to get one is to buy a WLA M53 at this point.

God knows I have raised this issue before, it gets convoluted, but if I recall correctly; WLA produces the SA M53 under contract for Century Arms, barrels are supplied to WLA by way of exclusive contract worked out between Green Mountain and Century, thus Mr. Hamer, and WLA, are not in a position to negotiate on the behalf of builders. I have contacted Green Mountain politely inquiring as to the possibility of selling barrels to the general public, or even if they would entertain a “Group Buy,” basically their response was, it is not a matter they care to discuss.

You would think given the political climate a manufacturer would want to address a market need, obviously their management does not feel it is in their economic interest to persuade Century to play nice and release the barrels for sale. But Century, not Mr. Hamer and WLA, is the entity to contact.....Good Luck on that one :?

Yes,both Richard Hamer and Wiselite have bent over backwards to help out and to keep us informed .However,in a situation where they have no control,we are on our own.I am sure if it was up to them,we would have some access to these. ---bil

Help out on this idea if you will

Buy apex barrel find barrel camming piece (could not find an on websites that I know of) and buy and put together

Or buy barrel with camming piece from Lea @ IO which is in .308 and change the camming piece to the apex 8mm barrel or obtain a .308 feed way and go with either .308 or 8mm.

Thoughts Ideas????

Ok, I may have highjacked this topic a little but I think its an interesting thought about apex barrels

New M53 Barrels are supplied to WLA along with the M53 parts sets. They are not ours to sell. WLA can't sell you the finished M53 either, they are all shipped to the customers distribution warehouse. We have no view as to where the guns go from there.
