MG42 receiver material

Post by Fal4Fun »

Does anybody know what the Mg42 receiver material grade is? What alloy welding rod are you using to weld it with?
Thanks.

I MIG welded mine with plain old ER70S wire.

I wish I knew a bit more about metals though -- I love the spark type/pattern that Euro gun steel throws off when grinding.

Has anybody thought about, or do you anneal the metal receiver after welding? i know that the weld area would be brittle after welding, heating the whole receiver up and cooling it down would lower the chance of the weld cracking later. unless this would make the receiver too soft, or worse yet warp the thing! Any thoughts?

It will only be brittle if you quench it.. Don't quench it and you will be fine.
