Re: Miss Belvedere
Similar story, harder to believe - Somewhere here on the web is a story about a German (?) tank that was driven into a pond during WW2 to keep the enemy from getting it. It was recently hauled out and it was found to have corroded VERY LITTLE. Not only did they clean it up (good pics of it on the si...

Re: Welding 1/2 gaps, some questions.
From my experience working the metal there is no indication that it was case hardened. It has never, in my memory on this forum, been mentioned that case hardening has been encountered. Germans seem to be pretty good engineers. Had case hardening been worth the effort I think we would know from some...

Re: Welding 1/2 gaps, some questions.
Ditto what JS said. You do not want to heat treat it, (as far as hardening it) because then it would likely break under stress, rather than stretch. Low carbon steel does not treat well for that exact reason, there is no carbon to treat. Keep an eye on your welds to see if there is any movement (str...

Re: How to build a dummy without damaging reciever??
All of my '42 is done with a MIG machine. I did it exactly as you are - very small welds (tacks) to hold it assembled. Then check alignment, then tack again. If anything is misaligned, I used an abrasive wheel in a 4" grinder to cut the weld, then bent it into alignment, then tack again. Let it cool...

Re: How to build a dummy without damaging reciever??
How about using a block of wood, cut the right size, and forced into the inside of the receiver parts? The bolt and rails could not be inserted, there is no way a cartridge could be inserted, much less fired and a barrel could probably still go in place. Paint the whole receiver, wood and all, flat ...

My '42 isn't running yet, but the first thing I would try is something that is easy to play with and easily reversible - screwing the flash supressor in and out. This would affect the amount of gas utilized to open the bolt, and affect the speed of that reaction. If we back the nozzle off the thread...

Cut receivers from retailers have been off the market for a while (a year ?). The place they are now being found are the auction sites, (gunbroker, auction arms, etc.) where they are going for what the market will bear (bare?). Anything below $1,000 is scarfed up pretty quick. Some kits (parts and r...

Alex - you may indeed be right. On the scale of my cannon, an exhaust system is a requirement. A barrel that is 6mm in diameter is a different situation. No hostility intended - I want you to educate me on this issue. Good chamber design, by the way. Completely off topic - Alex, have you been to Des...

Interesting design and 100% feasible for the first shot. What is the plan for purging the chamber of exhaust gases? My experience: I have built a cannon that uses oxygen and acetylene. 8" diameter by 8' long. A touch hole at the breech, plastic bag over the muzzle while charging. Charge through the ...

Ok- For those of you with these parts in hand (above), you can start figuring out how the front sight goes together. You will also need the barrel shroud - probably the largest piece you have. It will have the mount on it, in the front on the top (duh). The two pins will hold everything together and...

OK - Parts ID on this page. Top row - left- first piece looks like the safety button that goes in the trigger group, not sure, as its not clear. next to that is the latch that holds the butt stock in place, mounts on the bottom of the receiver, on the part you don't have yet/ next- triangular piece ...

Drooling Idiot - you are right- the slick little clip on light is made for my HK rifle scope, but will fit the older style MG3 scope as well (both scopes are from the same manufacturer, lets figure that one out GTS ). Bil - No, I don't believe the two styles of tripod scopes can be confused. As I re...

The optics for the current issue tripod for the MG42/53/3 (all of them) are excellent. Mine are like new in outstanding condition. I would expect this particluar "batch" to be all like this. The manufacturer is Hensoldt, which is an old, well established, very high quality producer of optics (you ca...

Check RTG for the missing parts. http://www.robertrtg.com/ He may have what you need in the small stuff. Good people to deal with. Their price on the MG42 tripod (with optics!)is also very good right now (never likely to be cheaper). Barrels are scarce but not impossible to obtain. I would pick up w...
