I've seen and held MG42's in dark gray park, probably a form of the zinc version. Problem is to determine if it was an original finish or a refinish done at a later date. Most I've seen were blued.

Try rubbing it with a rag and some automatic transmission fluid. It sometimes works for me.

Got the manuals, just can't find them when I need them to sound erudite. I usually think of the pieces as the trunnion thus my mistake.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think you're referring to the cam "pieces" rather than cam "sections." The cam pieces are the squarish machined parts that fit around the receiver just aft of the rear sight. The cam sections are part of the receiver where the cam pieces attach. I wonder if during the course of the war the tooling to stamp the receivers varied some due to the press of business and allied air raids thus causing the dimensions to vary slightly. I read somewhere that most of the receiver blanks were stamped out by one company but I don't know how many stamping...
