Re: Überschießtafel for the Lafette 34 & 42

Thanks for that, great study!

There is one more Tafel, that being the one I have, also known as "The reproduction that will not fit in the alloted space."

Re: Restoring 34 Lafette

An update. Folke Myrvang, the author of the MG34/42 book, recommends that the Lafette not be disassembled. It is, in my experience, a chore. So when I restored mine I didn't have a FCG. I did get a Lafette 42 FCG, so finally decided it's better than nothing. In test fitting, it looks like the Lafett...

Odd MG34 bipod

Hi gang,

Got this bipod today. No screws...some other dohickey instead.

The entire thing has but one marking, on the head (WaA 813).

Side reinforcements on legs are the long variety.

Late war? Post war?

Thanks.

Re: M53 bushing replacement

I did somewhat change the subject, but it's still on topic since it involves all the same parts. Yes, it appears that the MG3 bushing threaded section is longer than that of the M53. It does indeed bottom out on the booster cup/ nozzle. I'm surprised nobody has complained about this before. I assume...

Re: M53 bushing replacement

I procured a M3 bushing from RTG. Combined with the M53 flash hider and recoil nozzle, the FH won't screw onto the M3 bushing all the way because the recoil nozzle prohibits it from doing so. It would appear that the M3 bushing threaded area is likely longer than that of the M53.

Re: M53 bushing replacement

I was hoping to weld in the bushing on multiple shrouds for resale (and also my own semi M53). In looking at the RTG ad again, it is quite clear that the used Rhinemetall bushings are MG3. So my original request to avoid MG3 in the discussion is void. Duh. So with the M53 kit comes the MG42-style sh...

Thanks Richard.

OK, I can readily tell the difference between MG42 and M3 barrel bearings....how do I discern between bushings?

M53 bushing replacement

There are discussions about measuring the location of the bushing for replacement which leave me wondering "why"? Forget about long vs. short bearing. For the sake of this discussion I'm talking about an M53 that was cut through the bushing and a replacement used Rhinemetall bushing from RTG. If ind...

Here's what I have so far. Note the manufacturer and inspectors (WaA) are not the same facility, even on the same piece! Top cover, clc (Richard Herder), WaA519 (Eichorn 1941, 1942) Top cover, bpr (Grossfuss) no WaA Top cover, 963 (mfg code unidentified), WaA4 (DWM), WaA407 Bipods: keep in mind thes...

Re: Which top cover is less common?

I tried to start something on different maker marks a while back but it was shot down by a mod, who is not a mod anymore. So it would be great to start going forth with getting data and info on this site. r That's stupid. Why would we not want to undertake a study of German MG codes and occurance? ...

Which top cover is less common?

I haven't seen published a list of quantities manufactured by firm, so at this point I suspect the rarity of marked parts is based more on survival than number manufactured. With nothing published, it then falls to collectors who have the experience of observation of a long time. So- please see atta...

Re: Receiver and shroud source

Shooter, have you seen the SELLING prices of 34 and 42 stuff lately? Assuming it continues this stuff isn’t inflated it’s an incredible investment!! Barrels I paid $100 for three years ago are topping $400!! Too bad I sold them at $300!! Duh. The only thing I can see that’s down is mg34 cut receiver...

Re: Review of John Baum's German Manuals

I have long relied on John Baum's MG translations for restoration and troubleshooting. But I recently found that John clearly goes well above and beyond translation. While disassembling the Lafette 34, I referred to his Lafette manual since it wasn't clear how the FCG could be removed. Upon reading ...

Re: Converting Lafette42 trigger for Lafette 34

Thanks Richard. This is for a semi 34, so it's one pull of the handle per shot. So either way, it's release the handle for the next shot. I was at Greg's (Allegheny) last week picking through his parts. The PITA is figuring out how to reshape the 42 trigger to work with the 34. The sled has to be re...

Thanks John. I didn't mean to sound critical, I'd just love a more active board here. There is so much interest in the 34/ 42.

You looked pretty good at KCR! Well rested, etc.

ps. How about a forum just for the Lafette?

Converting Lafette42 trigger for Lafette 34

Howdy gang, I have a jalopy Lafette 34 with no fire control parts and want at least something sort of functional. So I took the entire FCG out of a Lafette 42. What a task! Three rivets/pins are end-peened. Looking at John Baum's D124/2 "MG34 Lafette" it appears that the 34 and 42 FCG are the same a...

Increasing MG42.us traffic and value

I read recently somebody (John?) wrote something like the traffic on the site is low since interest in the MG34 and MG42 is past peak. I disagree. More M53 kits have been imported than MG42. Look at the MG34 and MG42 activity on GB and Ebay- it's crazy. Interest is very high- I just think the diffic...
