Re: Night sights
I had a chance to check my night sights out. The rear sight, which has probably been covered most of it's life works, but the front sight, which was exposed when I got it, doesn't glow. I don't know of anyway to "recharge" something like that. Can it be done?

Re: MG42 Cleaning
After bead blasting my receiver/shroud assembly, I used a can of automotive brake cleaner to rinse out the inside surfaces. They come with a plastic nozzle to get into the "nooks and cranies" and it worked pretty well for me. It strips all the oil and grease off due to the chemical content, but anyo...

Re: barrel shroud
Hi John, I completely understand. A few years ago I worked for a fellow who owned a Corvette restoration parts business. While I worked for him, we would stock a booth at "Corvettes at Carlise" Pa. All you saw was the builders buying parts from the time you got there and opened up, until you shut do...

Re: barrel shroud
Hi John. Sorry but Knob Creek is probably not in the cards. I'm retired, but in poor health. It would stretch the checkbook too far. But I would love to hear about it, maybe you could post high lights. Always wanted to go there, all the noise and gunpowder in the air!!!

Re: Night sights
Thanks again, John. I know I hadn't seen them on the other builds I've seen, but I just didn't know enough about the subject. How about you Along? Did your kit come with them?

Night sights
I'm throwing this out to the more knowledgeable members out there. My M53 kit from Apex came with the "glow in the dark" luminescence night sights. I really doubt that they still work, but I was curious as to if this was a common feature, or did I get lucky? I hadn't seen this to be a common feature...

If anyone looses interest in their project, I would be willing to purchase all or part of their kit.

Re: barrel shroud
I've tried the normal vendors like Apex, with no luck. I really don't need another kit, just the shroud and a few key parts. Any member out there have a spare they would give up?

Great find. The Maxim's have always interested me, given their history. Please post some pictures of the completed project. I didn't know Maxim's could be modified to semi only. Are there other Maxim owners out there with semi versions? Where are the pictures? Come on guys, tease us a little!

Re: my collection
Not to question your collection, but from the front view the one on the left has the round barrel shroud like an MG34. Is that some early variant using MG34 components on an MG42 receiver? Either way, it's still a great collection. And like Along said, with toys like that, the ammo isn't gonna last ...

Hi 1komjager. I had found this website,http://www.zib-militaria.de/epages/61431412.sf/en_GB/? which is located in your home country. They seemed to have everything we all want and need, but cannot be imported to us. No reason you couldn't enjoy the "spoils of war". Great stuff here.

Thanks John. That's pretty much what I was thinking it was. It's an interesting paper weight. Don't guess anyone would want it.

barrel shroud
Well guys I have so many parts left over, I'm looking for a barrel shroud section so I can start another build. I bought a .308 conversion, and now have all the 8mm parts left over. All I really need is the shroud, receiver and a few small parts to build another complete M53/MG42. If anyone has a sp...

Re: Receivers from BRP
Hey Guys, I need to know what I have here. This is the roughest looking stock and buffer I have seen. 20160314_155419.jpeg 20160314_155334.jpeg 20160314_155406.jpeg 20160314_155529.jpeg 20160314_155508.jpeg It looks like a really rushed effort, with glued spots where the wood broke thru during the c...

Re: Receivers from BRP
Thanks Along. I know what you mean about the AR guys. I built my brother-in-law an AR, but to hear him tell it he was a one man show. After I built it, and test fired, sighted in and tuned the trigger, I caught him bragging to his buddy's about how he had to step in and "help me out". Needless to sa...

Re: Receivers from BRP
Thanks John. Coming from you that means a lot. As to the hook on the AR hammer, I had already cut it off, as I was afraid it might hang up on the bolt. And I know what you mean about others bragging about their AR builds. I hear that all the time, as if it was something difficult to do. I just let t...

Re: Receivers from BRP
Ok fella's it's bragging time. I fired my project for the first time today. I followed Der Alders recommendation and test fired the gun with primer only brass, which allowed me to check the feeding and ejection of empty cases. The primer only brass had excellent primer strikes, well centered and str...

Re: MG 42 Build:Headspacing a New barrel?
Hi John. That's why I asked for some of the more experienced builders to chip in. I've head spaced my FAL, using the bolt with the extractor and ejector removed to get the spacing correct. With those rifles, you use machinist pins of various sizes to determine which locking shoulder pin is the corre...

Re: MG 42 Build:Headspacing a New barrel?
Along, something doesn't sound right here. As for the shim stock, this is the only way I've ever used it. It comes on a roll, and you cut and trim to fit your needs. Don't worry about hardness of the stock. I don't know of any "pre - made" shims for this application, maybe others do. As to the gauge...

Excellent job! If John Baum says it looks real to him, that's all you need to know! Very impressive use of common materials to make an uncommon addition to your MG42.
